Maltese President in Hobsons Bay

Like any OzMalt, I was mighty proud to meet and chat with Her Excellency the President of Malta the Hon Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca, during her recent visit as guest of honour at a charity dinner dance at Altona’s Grand Star receptions in July.

The diminutive President was charming and extremely generous with her time, literally stopping to speak to everyone in the packed out auditorium!    President Coleiro-Preca was on an unofficial visit to Australia.  She was full of praise for Malta’s successes in their adopted homeland, and greatly impressed by the achievements of the younger generation.  More than 7000Euros was raised for the President’s charity the Maltese Community Chest Fund.  The event was organised by three young Maltese-Australians from the western suburbs.

Daniel Pisani, Lourdes Piscopo and Joe Falzon’s sell-out dinner dance was designed to keep the Maltese spirit alive in Australia and to  give back to a community that is so far but still so close to their hearts.

The showed great interest in my background, was familiar with my hometown of St Paul’s Bay having holidayed there since childhood.  The President was particularly pleased when she learned of my local government history as Australia’s first Maltese female mayor.

She kindly invited me to look her up next time I’m in Malta!
